Appearance

Runesmith comes with a dark and a light color theme, each with its own syntax colors, and its own file icons. Plugins can add more color themes, syntax color schemes and file icon themes. Whatever you choose applies at once, without a restart, and stays chosen the next time Runesmith starts.

Choose a theme

  1. Open Settings (Ctrl,) at Appearance, or Customize on the welcome screen.
  2. Pick a Color theme. The list shows each theme with a few of its colors, whether it is dark or light, and the plugin it comes from.
  3. Pick an Accent color, Syntax colors and File icons if you want others than the theme gives you.

CtrlShiftT (View › Toggle Light and Dark Theme) switches to Runesmith's light theme while a dark one shows, and to its dark theme otherwise.

What each choice changes

ChoiceSettingWhat it changes
Color themeappearance.themeThe colors of the window, the panels, the menus and the editor. Follow the system (system) shows Runesmith's dark or light theme as your system's setting asks, and changes along with it.
Accent colorappearance.accentSelections, focus, the selected item and progress. Pick a swatch or type a hex color; Theme default goes back to the theme's own accent. Text on the accent is white or black, whichever reads better.
Syntax colorseditor.colorSchemeThe colors of keywords, strings, comments and the rest of the code. The color theme's own follows the theme: a plugin's theme can bring its own scheme, and Runesmith's themes use theirs. Open editors are colored again at once.
File iconsappearance.fileIconThemeThe icons of files and folders in the Explorer, the editor tabs, Quick Open and the search results. Files the icon theme does not cover keep Runesmith's icon.

The editor's background and plain text always take the color theme's colors, so a syntax color scheme changes only the colors of code.

Themes from plugins

Install a theme plugin like any other, from the plugin hub or as a local plugin; see Plugins from the hub. Its themes, schemes and icon themes show in the lists after the next start, with the plugin's name beside them. A theme plugin needs no capabilities: it only brings colors and icons.

When you turn the plugin off or remove it, Runesmith goes back to its own dark theme, its own syntax colors and its own icons, and the setting keeps the theme's id, shown as Not installed. When the plugin comes back, so does its theme.

Runesmith checks a plugin's theme before it lists it. A theme whose text would be too faint to read on its backgrounds, whose colors are not colors, or that says it is dark but has a light background, is left out. The Plugins channel of the Output panel says which themes were left out and why, and which ones may be hard to read.
