New projects
File › New Project (CtrlShiftN) opens a dialog that creates a project from a template and opens it. The templates come
from plugins: the .NET SDK's templates and the ones you installed with dotnet new install, and Runesmith's own Java templates.
Create a project
- Press CtrlShiftN, or choose File › New Project.
- Pick a template in the list on the left. Type in Search templates to narrow the list; the Up and Down keys move through the results while you type.
- Type the project's Name and choose its Location. The hint under Location shows the folder Runesmith creates.
- Change the template's options on the right, if you want to.
- Press Create, or Enter.
The dialog shows each step while it works, such as running dotnet new. When it is done, Runesmith opens the new folder and the project's
main file, such as Program.cs or Main.java. If creating fails, the dialog stays open and says why, and the New Project channel of
the Output panel has the details, so you can change an option and press Create again.
The template list
The list groups templates by kind: Console, Library, Web, Desktop, Test and Other. Each row shows the template's name, its language and the first line of its description. The templates you used last come first, under Recent.
- Search matches every word you type against the name, the description, the language, the kind and the template's tags, so
web apiorjava gradlefinds what you mean. - Language chips (C#, Java, ...) next to the search field show one language's templates. Click the chip again to show all.
- Kind chips under the search field show one kind of template, in the same way.
The list fills as each plugin answers, so the first templates show before the slower plugins finish.
The form
| Field | What it does |
|---|---|
| Name | The name of the new folder and, for most templates, of the project. It cannot contain / \ : * ? " < > |. |
| Location | The folder the new folder goes in. A folder with that name that already has files in it is refused. |
| Create Git repository | Runs git init in the new folder. It shows only when git is on the PATH. |
The template's own options follow, with a hint under each one. The options most people change are always visible; the rest are under Advanced. About this template shows the template's description, author, tags and where it comes from. Create stays disabled while an option has a problem, and the problem shows under its field.
Runesmith remembers the last Location, whether Create Git repository was on, and the options you changed for each template, so the next project from the same template starts with them.
Where templates come from
Templates are plugins, so you can turn a language's templates off without losing the language: open Settings › Plugins and turn off C# templates or Java templates.
- C# templates lists the templates of the .NET SDK and of the template packages you installed. See
C# support for how it finds them and how Create runs
dotnet new. - Java templates has Runesmith's own Application, Library, Compact source file and Multi-module project templates, for Maven, Gradle or no build system. See Java support.
A plugin adds templates by exporting an IProjectTemplateProvider, from Runesmith.Sdk.Templates; its options are an OptionSet, which
the dialog draws.
