Find in files

The Search panel searches every file of the open folder and lists the matches by file. It searches as you type, and searches the text of open editors, unsaved changes included.

  1. Press CtrlShiftF. When text is selected in the editor, it becomes the query.
  2. Type what to find. The results update shortly after you stop typing, or at once when you press Enter.
  3. Click a match to open the file at that line. Go › Back returns to where you were.

The buttons beside the box match case (Aa), match whole words (ab) and treat the query as a regular expression (.*). Above the results, a line says how many matches were found in how many files.

Choose the files

The two boxes under the query take globs, separated by semicolons:

BoxExampleMeaning
Files to include*.cs;src/**Search only files that match one of the globs.
Files to exclude**/Generated/**Leave out files that match one of the globs.
GlobMatches
*Any part of a name, such as *.cs.
?One character.
**Any number of folders, such as src/**/*.cs.
A glob without /A name at any depth: bin means **/bin.

Excluding a folder excludes everything in it. On Windows and macOS, globs ignore case.

Search always leaves out what the files.exclude setting excludes, files over 10 MB and binary files. It stops after 10,000 matches and says so.
